Ararat Viva Multicultural Festival postponed
Heavy rainfall across the region over the past month has caused the Ararat Rural City Council and Ararat Police to postpone this Saturday’s highly anticipated Viva Multicultural Festival.
The event has been rescheduled and will now take place at Alexandra Oval on Saturday, November 26 2016.
Ararat Rural City Council CEO, Andrew Evans said postponing the festival was a difficult decision, but was done in the best interest of the community and participants.
“While it has been great to have the much needed rain fill up our dams and lakes, particularly over the last week it has left Alexandra Oval – the site of the Viva Festival – quite wet under foot,” Mr Evans said.
“We are anticipating a huge crowd at this event to celebrate the cultural diversity and harmony in our municipality, and we don’t want any safety issues with a wet, unstable surface.
“Things will hopefully have dried out by the rescheduled date of November 26 and the Viva Festival will be bigger and better than ever.”
First held in the region in 2010, the festival returns to Ararat following a three year hiatus.
This year's festival is again being run in collaboration with Victoria Police and various local community groups and for the first time will include a family outdoor cinema.
Ararat Police Senior Sergeant Damian Ferrari said the day will be a celebration of Ararat’s multicultural community through food, activities, music, dance and performance.
“The Viva Festival is a fantastic initiative and will go a long way in promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion of different cultures and how we can work together to ensure this occurs,” he said.
“The day will be a fantastic opportunity for the community to be involved in gaining some additional understanding of differing cultures and enjoy an array of different foods from varying cultures.
“We ask that you lock the new date in and attend the festival to make it an extra special day.”
