Ararat takes its name from nearby Mount Ararat which was named by the pioneer Horatio Spencer Wills in 1840.
Today, visitors can glance into the past at the notorious J-Ward Gaol and the Langi Morgala Museum. Discover Ararat’s gold heritage at the Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre. Visit the Ararat Regional Art Gallery in the impressive late Victorian Town Hall. Learn about the significant railway history at the Railway Heritage Museum. Or visit Alexandra Gardens, an oasis in the heart of Ararat. With an ornamental lake, expansive lawns, large shade trees and covered playground it is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic, take a stroll or just relax.
Ararat is an ideal base for exploring the region’s many natural attractions including the Grampians National Park, Mount Langi Ghiran, Mount Cole and Mount Buangor. Take a drive up One Tree Hill for a 360-degree view of the eastern edge of the Grampians National Park, Mount Langi Ghiran and Ararat Township.
Enjoy the region’s finest foods and local produce at a variety of award-winning cafes, wine bars, bistros, country pubs, restaurants and take away outlets. Wander down Barkly Street and enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine under the grapevines.
